Drawing an extra card each turn

  • #1 Feb 12, 2013

I'm looking for ways to refill my hand in my 5c 'my rules' deck. Usually I'll play my hand out by 5th-6th turn and without one of these draw-on-upkeep cards I'm just topdecking lands the rest of the game.

Phyrexian Arena is not in the deck, because of splashability and the life loss actually kinda matters; Bob is not in the deck for obvious reasons
Honden of Seeing Winds and Staff of Nin are pricier but the draw is worth it
Bottled Cloister is sometimes risky, but it shouldn't be once I play my hand out, is perfectly on-theme for the deck, and it's funny when it inevitably swaps control
    Moonring Mirror is basically risk-free
Seer's Sundial works great for topdecking lands with an empty hand

I'm also running the three enchantresses cards and a Tidings.

This finds its way in to almost all my decks. No one wants to spend 4 under normal circumstances, no one wants to spend removal on something with a cumulative upkeep, no one stops you from drawing cards. Great early, great late, great all the time, and the trigger might allow you topdeck into a counterspell and stop what they just cast.

Also, Sun Titan can dig it out. So. Good.

Mind Unbound is a massive CA engine if it doesn't get killed fast.

I was going to say this. It can get crazy.

TRADE SECRETS one of the best draw spells in the game. Recurring Insight, is right in par as well. Anvil of Bogardan if cool and so is Teferi's puzzle Box the last to are colorless which is nice in a 5c. just some Ideas I would stay a way form minds eye it is only ok. you are running blue you have much better options and I would also drop tiddings.

I like Graveborn Muse and Dark Confidant. If their life loss loses you game then you might want to squeeze some life gain into the deck or drop your curve. Both being creatures is great too since they are easy to kill, beat face, and easier to reanimate.

If you're running a 5-color deck, might as well use the best card draw effects in the game. Rhystic Study and Recurring Insight would start you off really well. A lot of the artifact-based draw effects just aren't as good because they're made to be available to all colors. Scroll Rack isn't quite card draw, but it certainly feels close enough if you have fetch lands to shuffle your library often. I agree with the inclusion of Wheel of Fortune effects if you really do find yourself running out of cards too early. Smile

Depending on your meta, Consecrated Sphinx can be great.

since you are in 5 colors, Damia, Sage of Stone does a pretty awesome job of re-filling your hand.

If you're already running Sylvan Library for the purpose of top deck awareness, you can also run Abundance. This combo reads draw 3 cards of the type of your choice (land/non-land) during your draw step.

If Phyrexian Arena, arguably one of the better of these types of card, is out because of life-loss, you may consider Bloodgift Demon. It's a Phyrexian Arena on a body with a "target player" clause. That would allow you to sac it if it's getting too much, block with it, keep attacking with it until it's killed, or even let someone else draw and get pinged if it really comes to that.
